Rhinoplasty surgery, or cosmetic surgery to the nose, is one of the cosmetic surgeries that brings great satisfaction to women and men alike. When considering cosmetic surgery of the nose, you must first evaluate what it is about your nose that you want to change. Often times, it is difficult for a person to put into words what it is about their nose that bothers them, and sometimes they are not even sure themselves. But this is very important for both the patient and the surgeon to know and understand, so that there are no misunderstandings or disappointments after the fact. It is very useful for the patient to fully evaluate what it is that they are looking to achieve, and to communicate what it is that they do not want. Both are equally important. During your consultation, it is helpful to have computer imaging so that you can visualize what the surgeon anticipates achieving with your nose. By seeing these images, you can communicate whether the vision that your surgeon has for your results is what you are anticipating. Often times, by seeing these images, you are better able to understand what you like, and what you do not like about your nose and the proposed changes.

Cosmetic nose surgery can have implications on nasal airway breathing, thus it is crucial that an internal nasal exam be performed prior to any cosmetic surgery to the nose. Rhinoplasty can improve nasal breathing if correcting a crooked nose due to a septal defect, but it can impair nasal breathing if the turbinates of the nose are enlarged or there is a deviated septum that has not been detected and corrected.

Historically, rhinoplasty surgery was performed to improve the cosmetic appearance of the nose through reduction of the cartilage and bones of the nose. Now, rhinoplasty is performed for a multitude of reasons, including adding structure to the nose, not just reduction. The nasal tip can be refined by either removing or adding cartilage, repositioning the cartilages, or both. The bridge or dorsum of the nose can be reduced if there is a hump, or cartilage can be added if the nose is not prominent enough. The alae, or nostrils, can be reduced or re-positioned as needed. The nose can be elongated, or shortened.

Rhinoplasty can be a very gratifying surgery when all of these factors are considered and the surgery is executed by an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon who understands the results that you are looking for.

Surgeons typically like to see young women wait until they are at least 15 before considering permanent changes to their nose with cosmetic surgery. For young men, waiting until age 18 is preferred, as their structural framework may not be complete until then. Exceptions to this rule are for persons with cleft lip/palate as this affects the development of their nose, or individuals who have suffered an injury to their nose.
